Macau’s gaming regulator chief emphasizes that responsible gambling is not just a good practice but a legal obligation for casino operators in the region, highlighting the government’s commitment to industry oversight.

Macau Gaming Regulator Reinforces Responsible Gambling Requirements

Ng Wai Han, director of Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), has declared that responsible gambling practices are essential for the sustainable development of Macau’s casino industry. Speaking at the “Responsible Gambling Promotion 2025 Closing Ceremony and Certificate Presentation” held on December 17 at MGM Cotai, Ng emphasized that these practices are now mandated by law.

The ceremony, co-organized by the Social Welfare Bureau, DICJ, and the University of Macau’s Institute for the Study of Commercial Gaming, recognized excellence in responsible gambling implementation. Fifteen gaming venues received awards as “Model Units for Responsible Gambling Implementation,” while 175 individuals earned certificates for completing specialized gambling counseling and instructor training programs.

Regulatory Oversight and Future Plans

The DICJ has implemented a comprehensive regulatory framework to ensure casino operators fulfill their responsible gambling obligations. This includes requiring regular reports from gaming concessionaires about their initiatives and conducting on-site inspections to evaluate implementation effectiveness.

“Authorities maintain strict oversight of the enforcement of casino entry bans while continuously strengthening supervision of all aspects of responsible gambling programs,” Ng noted during her address. These measures aim to ensure full compliance with regulations and protect vulnerable individuals from gambling-related harm.

Looking forward, Macau’s government plans to intensify public awareness campaigns about responsible gambling. This strategy involves collaboration with industry stakeholders and expanding outreach through various channels to enhance public understanding and prevent gambling disorders.

About Macau’s Gaming Regulator

The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, known locally as Direcção de Inspecção e Coordenação de Jogos (DICJ), serves as Macau’s primary gaming industry regulator. This agency provides guidance to the Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region on economic policies related to casino games, other forms of gaming, and public gaming activities.

The DICJ’s responsibilities extend to drafting and enforcing industry standards and regulations. Through its oversight, the bureau plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of Macau’s casino sector, which remains the city’s economic foundation despite recent diversification efforts.

As Macau’s gaming industry continues to evolve, the DICJ’s emphasis on responsible gambling reflects the government’s commitment to balancing economic growth with social responsibility in what remains one of the world’s largest gambling markets.
