Kalshi Unveils New Safety Tools for Platform Users

Prediction market Kalshi rolls out new features to boost player safety and responsible engagement, a move with implications for the broader gambling landscape.

Key Takeaways

* Kalshi is implementing new measures, including a parent portal and selfie verification, to prevent minors from accessing its prediction market platform.
* A new “family accounts” feature will allow users to monitor loved ones’ betting activity, aiming to foster accountability among close circles.
* These developments occur amidst ongoing regulatory scrutiny of prediction markets, particularly concerning age verification and the division of oversight between federal and state authorities.

Enhancing Age Verification and Parental Oversight

Kalshi, a prediction market firm, is introducing new measures designed to prevent underage individuals from using its platform. Speaking at the Semafor World Economy conference in Washington, DC, Tarek Mansour, co-founder and CEO of Kalshi, detailed these initiatives.

New Parent Portal and Selfie Requirement

Mansour announced the launch of a new portal that enables parents to submit their identification, even if they are not Kalshi users, to check if their personal information is being used by someone else. This feature allows parents to determine if their children are using their ID to access the trading service and take appropriate action. In addition to this, Kalshi is implementing a selfie requirement during account registration. Each submitted image will be reviewed by AI technology to verify the identity of the person signing up for an account.

Fostering Accountability Through Family Accounts

Beyond age verification, Kalshi plans to introduce a feature allowing friends and family members to monitor one another’s betting activity. Mansour explained that the company is developing a concept of “family accounts,” where users can track each other’s behavior on the platform. The goal is to create a sense of accountability among close circles, enabling individuals to flag potentially excessive activity. According to Mansour, this initiative is intended to promote responsible use of the platform rather than encourage overuse.

Such measures align with broader industry trends in player protection. For example, New York is implementing new features, including biometric verification, to confirm if bettors meet the legal age requirement before setting up accounts and placing wagers in other gambling sectors.

Regulatory Landscape for Prediction Markets

Prediction markets are regulated at the federal level by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), and participants must be at least 18 years old. Unlike traditional sportsbooks, which often face stricter state gaming regulations requiring extensive safeguards and identity verification, prediction markets generally operate under more flexible onboarding requirements.

The CFTC does mandate that prediction markets adhere to know-your-customer (KYC) rules. However, David Miller, the agency’s director of enforcement, stated last month that enforcement efforts prioritize willful rule violations over technical infractions. Kalshi and other CFTC-regulated prediction markets carry regulatory obligations, including verifying user identities and preventing platform exploitation for insider trading.

The regulatory arrangement for prediction markets has frequently led to disagreements with state regulators. Many states contend that providers like Kalshi should fall under their jurisdiction rather than the CFTC. Montana is one state that has sought to stop Kalshi’s products within its borders, leading to a lawsuit, which is among several legal challenges Kalshi is currently involved in. These ongoing debates highlight the complex regulatory environment surrounding innovative gambling-adjacent platforms.
