It tends to focus on low-cost money transfer and it market itself primarily through traditional advertising and its website.Skrill first came to the market as Moneybookers in 2001. After a short period, Moneybookers was acquired by Investcorp (early 2007) before being resold again in 2009. As early as 2010, Skrill, then Moneybookers was one of the fastest growing private equity backed firm in the UK according to Sunday Times. In 2013 Moneybookers was rebranded to Skrill just before being acquired by CVC Capital Partners. It was later purchased by Optimal Payments in 2015.On the downside, Skrill has attracted some criticism from some customers. First, it has a lower Better Business Bureau rating. Most of the complaints relate to security issues or withholding of funds as well as the slow process of resolving such matters. Some merchants have also complained of Skrill not disclosing some fees and rates such as PCI Compliance Fee and ETF. But generally, Skrill is still one of the top online payment providers. It's bad rating seems to be associated with its fraud prevention policies.
